Make A Junk Art Plaque With Old Pens

Make a Junk Art Plaque With Old Pens

Many professionals and organizations give out pens with advertising on them. Some have the company's name, phone number, a catchy phrase or a logo. When they run out of ink, throw them in a drawer. After a while you will have enough for a junk art project.

Instructions

1. Cut a piece of 1/4-inch plywood to 1-by-2 foot size. Sand the edges to eliminate splinters and saw marks.

2. Collect pleasing pictures from magazines, catalogs or newspapers. Glue the pictures to the plywood covering blemishes around the edges. Place the pictures on the plywood to make a pleasing backdrop for the pens. Remember that the pictures in the middle will be hidden behind the pens.

3. Put several coats of polyurethane over the pictures and plywood. Apply the polyurethane before gluing the pens to the plywood as polyurethane will dissolve plastic pens.

4. Wait for the polyurethane to dry. Start adding pens by gluing two pens vertically in the middle of the plywood (over the pictures) so that the advertising or logo faces out. Wait for the glue to dry to avoid knocking pens out of place. When the glue dries, glue two more pens, one on each side. Continue to glue pens until you run out of room or pens.

5. Attach two hook eyes to the top of the plywood for hanging. Make a pilot hole with a awl about 1 inch from each end. Screw in the hook eyes being careful not to break the plywood.
