Diy Tile Bath

Installing bath tile is within do-it-yourselfers' capabilities.

Tile shower surrounds are a practical choice for homeowners who are remodeling their bathroom. Installing tile above a bathtub will protect your walls from water damage. The tile will also allow you to bring a touch of elegance and beauty into your bathroom. One of the best things about tile is it can be a do-it-yourself project.

Instructions

1. Measure the walls above the bathtub with a measuring tape. Transfer the measurements with a pencil to cement backer board.

2. Cut the cement backer board by scoring it with a utility knife and snapping it from the other side.

3. Install cement backer board over the wall studs with a screwdriver and screws. Cover the seams of the cement backer board with fiberglass mesh tape. Spread thin-set mortar on top of the tape with the flat edge of a notched trowel. Allow the thin-set to dry completely.

4. Mark the cement backer board where you will begin laying out the tiles, using a measuring tape and a chalk line.

5. Apply thin-set mortar to the backer board with a notched trowel. Hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle while applying the mortar to the wall. Begin applying the mortar at the marked starting line on the wall. Working from the bottom of the wall and press each tile into place on thin-set mortar. Place tile spacers between each of the tiles. Cut the tiles to size with a tile wet saw. Allow the mortar to dry completely.

6. Remove the tile spacers from the wall. Spread mixed grout over the tile joints with a grout float. Press the grout into the tile joints before removing the excess grout with a damp grout sponge. Do not apply grout between the tub and the tile. Allow the grout to dry completely.

7. Caulk the area between the tub and the bottom row of tile.
