Hook Up Hot & Cold Water To A Kitchen Sink

Hot and cold water is essential in the kitchen.

Whether you're installing a new kitchen sink or merely fixing a leak, knowing change out the hot and cold water lines on your kitchen sink can save you expensive plumbing repair costs.

Instructions

1. Remove all items from the cabinet under your kitchen sink.

2. Locate the two main water shut-off valves and turn them both to the right. The hot water line will generally be located on the left side and can be identified by the piece of copper tubing attached to the valve. This piece of tubing, which is also controlled by the hot water shut-off valve, delivers heat from your hot water heater.

3. Place a drain pan under the water lines. Place some old rags along the back of your cabinet under the water shut-off valves. Turn on both faucets--or a single faucet if that's the type of sink you have--to let any excess water move through the lines.

4. Unbolt the hot water line from the shut-off valve by using an open-ended wrench. Once that end is free, use the wrench to remove the bolt that connects the other end of the water line to the hot water line running from your faucet head. Hand dry both the end of the water line running down from your faucet and the shut-off valve connection. Repeat this process to remove the cold water line.

5. Open the can of plumber's seal and stir the contents. Brush a small amount onto the inner threads of the replacement hot water line. Connect one end of the new line to the hot water shut-off valve, then connect the other end to the line coming from the faucet. Repeat this process before re-connecting the cold water line. Allow about 30 minutes for the plumber's seal to dry. Plumber's seal usually dries quickly, but allow 30 minutes to be on the safe side.

6. Turn both emergency water shut-off valves back into the On position. Turn on your hot faucet and check that all connections are secure and dry. Do the same with your cold water.

7. Remove the drain pan and replace the items back into the cabinet.
