Amish Kitchen Tools

The Amish people strive to live a simple life.

The Amish people desire to live a simple life without all or most of the trappings of modern conveniences. While those who embrace modern technology own countless electric gadgets and tools for the kitchen, the Amish use traditional kitchen tools that have served as an important part of their daily life for decades without changes or improvements.

Utensils

Amish people stock wooden spoons, measuring spoons, spatulas, dippers, plate scrapers, rolling pins, sifters and cookie scoops in addition to traditional eating utensils in their kitchens.

Non-electrical Appliances

The Amish shy away from electrical appliances, yet they utilize many specialized items that aren't electric. Inside the Amish kitchen you are likely to find a butter churn for making fresh butter by hand or a cast iron waffle maker that only requires a heat source to create tasty breakfast treats. An egg beater that you crank by hand is another useful tool as well as a hand-crank blender to blend ingredients for various recipes. An all-in-one apple slicer, corer and peeler is also found in Amish kitchens.

Pots and Pans

Various cake and bread pans, as wells as cooking pots, find a home in the Amish Kitchen. Saucepans and large bowls are mainstays. Cookie sheets are a staple in the kitchen to create home-baked cookies.

Miscellaneous

Amish people stock their kitchens with miscellaneous items that prove helpful in their cooking tasks. Home canning kits allow the Amish to can vegetables, fruits and homemade jellies and jams. Pie birds prove a whimsical yet helpful tool in the Amish kitchen. They place one in the center of each pie as they set it in the oven to assist in regulating steam and to keep the pie from boiling over.
