Create Evenly Spaced 45degree Stripes In Photoshop Cs2

Create Evenly Spaced 45-Degree Stripes in Photoshop CS2

Adobe Photoshop features a number of tools and filters that help to automate an artist's job. Calculating the angle between lines can be tedious and potentially difficult with a pen and paper, but with a digital workroom like Photoshop, you can let the computer handle the calculations for you. Creating evenly spaced 45-degree stripes in Photoshop CS2 requires first creating a set of parallel lines, then converting those lines from rectangular to polar coordinates. This will create a starburst shape with eight individual stripes, each 45 degrees away from the next.

Instructions

1. Create a new image file in Photoshop CS2 by accessing the File menu and choosing New. Enter white as the background color and make the dimensions of the image 80 pixels wide and 80 pixels tall.

2. Create a new layer by clicking on the Create a new layer button in the Layers pane at the bottom left of the Photoshop CS2 window.

3. Select the Line Tool from the toolbox and create a straight, vertical line by clicking and dragging your cursor over the image. Ensure that the line is straight by holding down the Shift key.

4. Rasterize the layer by clicking on the Layer menu, selecting Rasterize and then Layer. This will remove the vector qualities of the line, and allow you to edit it.

5. Click on the Move Tool in the toolbox and drag the line to the far left side of the image. Photoshop CS2 will automatically lock the line to the left side as it gets close to the edge, helping you to position it.

6. Duplicate the line layer by dragging the layer to the Create a new layer button in the Layers pane.

7. Hold down the Shift key and press the right arrow key. This will nudge the duplicate line 10 pixels to the right.

8. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 six more times until you have created a total of eight vertical lines, each 10 pixels apart.

9. Combine all the layers by opening the Layer menu and choosing Flatten Image.

10. Access the Filter menu, then choose Distort and Polar Coordinates. Make sure that the radio button next to Rectangular to Polar is active, and press OK.

Tips Warnings

This process works because when you divide 360 (the degrees in a circle) by 45 (the degree measurement between each line you want), you get 8 (the number of lines you need to use to have equally spaced 45-degree stripes).
