Hdmi Cable Problems With A Ps3

HDMI Cable Problems With a PS3

The Playstation 3 uses a single cable called HDMI to transmit high-definition video and audio to a high-definition TV. There is a lot of convenience in using a single cable to do all of this, but there are also a number of problems that can occur due to the HDMI's construction and the way that its technology works. Here are some of the common problems that a HDMI cable can have with a PS3 and what to do about them.

HDMI Cable Won't Stay Plugged In

The HDMI cable holds into the PS3 socket through friction because it doesn't have any kind of locking device. SInce HDMI cables are heavy, it's easy for them to bend and for gravity to pull it back out of the PS3. Making sure that there is no strain on the HDMI cable can help to prevent this.

HDMI Cable is Bent

The HDMI cable often gets bent as it twists between the output of the PS3 and into the input of the HDTV with which it is being used. This can cause interference with the video signal, as well as physical damage. The solution is to get a right angle HDMI adapter that will go into the PS3 and then present a vertical socket for the HDMI cable to plug into. This totally eliminates any strain and also uses gravity to help keep the HDMI cable in position in the PS3.

HDMI Doesn't Transmit Video

Check that the HDTV (or video monitor being used) has been set to use the HDMI input to which the PS3 is connected. Make sure that HDMI has been selected in the PS3's Settings and that it has been set to Automatic.

Video Freezes or Blacks Out

Turn off both the HDTV and the PS3. Turn on the HDTV and set the input to that which the PS3 HDMI cable is attached. Turn on the PS3 by using the Power Button and then hold it in for 5 or 6 seconds, releasing it after the second beep. This should automatically configure the PS3 to the HDTV's native video resolution.

HDMI Doesn't Transmit Audio

Check that HDMI is selected in the PS3's Settings and that Dolby Digital is not selected in the Audio Settings. If Dolby Digital has been selected, then audio is only being transmitted through the optical audio output and not through the HDMI cable.

Blu-ray Movies Can't Be Seen

The content protection scheme of the HDMI can have trouble if it and the Blu-ray movie don't properly sync up. Turn off the HDTV and the PS3 and turn the HDTV back on. Turn on the PS3 and wait till the menu screen appears on the HDTV. Insert the Blu-ray movie and wait for it to appear on the menu screen. Click on the icon of the Blu-ray movie to play it.

Warning

Using an inexpensive HDMI cable can lead to problems due to poor internal construction. Purchasing a quality HDMI cable from a reputable source is advised.

There is less chance of a problem with a HDMI cable if it is 3 feet than if it is 12 feet. It is advised to use as short a length as possible.
