Troubleshoot A Well Water Jet Pump

When your well jet pump stops working and the water to your home, out-building or sprinkler system stops flowing, you need it fixed and fast. Because of the internal components of a jet pump, it may be difficult to figure out what is wrong with the unit. Here is find the problem so you can get your water well jet pump running again.

Instructions

1. Verify that the power to the water well jet pump is on. This is a simple step, but if not done, you'll lose a lot of time trouble shooting a pump that has nothing wrong with it.

2. Check the fuse or breaker box. If you blow a fuse or trip a breaker, that is an indication of an electrical surge. Replace the fuse or flip the breaker back on and see if that solves the problem. If it does not, go on to Step 3.

3. Look at the pressure switch. Sometimes the pressure settings are set so low that the pump will not run. Reset the pressure settings as indicated in the inside cover of the switch. The pump should kick on when the system registers the new setting.

4. Have an electrician check your wiring. Sometimes pumps need a special voltage, such as 115V or 230V.

5. Pull the pump and flush the debris out. If you installed your pump in a condition with sandy water, you may need to put a sand filter on before the pump to prevent damage to it.

6. Re-prime the pump. Do this when the pump runs, but puts out no water. Check all connections for air leaks first, and then follow the manufacturer's instructions to re-prime the pump.

Tips Warnings

Watch out for short cycling which mean that the pump turns on and off in rapid succession. This may indicate that you have a bad bladder in the tank.
