Replacing the rear lights on most vehicles requires removing the taillight assembly.
The brake lights on the 2000 Mazda MPV are combined bulbs with the taillights. The taillights illuminate when the headlight switch is on and the brake light illuminates a second filament inside the taillight bulb when the brake pedal is applied. Two other lights are housed inside the taillight assembly--the reverse light and the turn signal light. To access these lights, the taillight assembly needs to be removed from the rear of the minivan.
Instructions
1. Ensure the engine is off, the MPV is in gear, the parking brake is applied and the headlight switch is off.
2. Open the rear lift gate.
3. Locate the two retaining screws located on the inner flange of the taillight assembly housing. Remove the two screws with the screwdriver.
4. Pull the assembly outward from the respective side of which brake light is being replaced first. For left driver's side brake light, pull the assembly out away from the driver's side flank of the vehicle (there are two ball-socketed clips under the assembly that need to be disconnected in order to remove the assembly). For passenger side brake light, pull the assembly away from the the passenger side flank of the MPV.
5. Pull the assembly out far enough to access the lights and wire connections behind the assembly.
6. Turn the top light socket (brake and taillight) and wire connection at the back of the assembly counterclockwise 1/4 turn. Remove the socket from the assembly. Pull the light out of the socket and plug the 7443 replacement automotive bulb into the socket. Test the taillight and brake light before plugging the light back into the assembly and then shut off the headlight switch.
7. Insert the bulb and socket back into the taillight assembly and then align the ball-socketed clips into their seats from the side of the MPV. Press the assembly over to align the holes of the assembly flange to the holes in the side of the rail and replace and tighten the retaining screws.
