Create a homemade garden gift basket.
Homemade gifts are a thoughtful way of welcoming new neighbors and celebrating a new move for family and friends. Homemade gifts might also be given during the holidays and for birthdays. Create homemade home gifts for friends, new neighbors or family using potholders, tin cans and shells from a nearby beach or craft store. Personalize your gifts with paint and wrap the gifts in fabric for a touch of creativity.
Kitchen Gift
Print and paint pot holders with the help of little hands. Purchase from a retail store a set of solid color potholders in a bright color, such as blue, yellow or green. Set both potholders over a sheet of cardboard or construction paper on a kitchen counter. Paint the palms of a young child's hands with brightly colored fabric paint that contrasts with the potholder's color. Instruct the children to press their hands against the potholder's surface and lift after stamping. Leave the fabric paint to dry for one day.
Home D cor Gift
Give the gift of light with homemade luminaries. Remove the labels from three tin cans and rinse them with warm water. Fill each tin can with water, 1-inch below the rim, and set in the freezer for 24 hours. The ice prevents each can from denting. Remove the tin cans from the freezer and wrap a 4-by-10 inch sheet of paper around each tin can. Secure with tape and draw a design on the paper with a marker. Lay each can on its side, over a towel, and punch holes into the cans with a galvanized nail and hammer according to the design sketched. Remove the paper on completion and spray paint. Place a tea light inside each tin can and give as a gift.
Outdoor Gift
The sound of a wind chime can be soothing to children and adults. Create a simple wind chime with seashells containing holes, fishing line and a 6-inch wood branch. Cut four 7-inch strings of fishing line with scissors. Wrap the fishing line around the wood branch three times and set each line 1 inch apart from each other. Thread each string through the hole of one seashell and loop around. Thread the string through the hole again and tie a knot. Add three more seashells in the same manner on each line to complete the wind chime.
Gardening Gift
Encourage new neighbors, friends and family to garden with a homemade garden basket. Set a small 2-pound bag of potting soil in a 12-inch wicker basket with a 6-inch clay pot, plant seeds, garden gloves, a trowel and cultivator. Purchase the wicker basket from a craft store and garden supplies from a home improvement store. Cover the gift basket with 1 yard of canvas material from the fabric store. Wrap twine around the top of the canvas and tie a plant marker to the front of the basket with the receiver's name.
