Use Cheesecloth In A Electric Food Dehydrator

In most cases, the use of cheesecloth in an electric food dehydrator is not necessary. Yet for small foods, and foods with seeds, such as okra and peppers, using cheesecloth can keep the dried food from falling through the air slots in the drying racks. Cheesecloth can be found at fabric stores and some grocery stores, especially during the summer months.

Instructions

1. Cut single or double layers of cheesecloth to fit your dehydrator trays. Depending on how closely woven the cheesecloth is will determine whether one layer or two is needed. The key is not to inhibit air circulation in the dryer.

2. Place the food to be dehydrated on the cheesecloth-covered racks in a single layer. The food can touch, but should not overlap.

3. Dry the food until it has reached the proper dehydrated state. For most vegetables this will take 10 to 12 hours, jerky will be dry in approximately 5 to 6 hours and fruits can take up to 48 hours if left in large pieces.

4. Wash the cheesecloth with hot, soapy water and rinse after use in the dehydrator. Hang to dry.
