Famous Greek Food

Ancient Greece is known as the "cradle of Western Civilization," and over time it has come to develop a unique cuisine that is influenced by Turkey, the Middle East and the Balkans. Some particular Greek foods are known more than others, with a few being famous the world over.








Baklava


Baklava is the most famous Greek pastry made from layers of flaky phyllo dough. It also is comprised of nuts and a honey sauce.


Moussaka


Moussaka is a famous Greek casserole dish. It is layered with either zucchini or eggplant (sometimes both) and a garlic meat sauce, then topped with custard.


Souvlaki


Souvlaki, also known as the gyro, is a dish made from beef, pork or lamb, which is folded into a pita and mixed with lettuce, tomato, onions and a cucumber-yogurt-garlic tzatziki sauce.


Sardeles Pastes


Sardeles Pastes is a famous snack food from Greece. It is fresh sardines that are skinned, salted and seasoned with oil, lemon or a house seasoning, depending on where they are found.


Spanakopita








Spanakopita is a favorite appetizer among Greek restaurants. It is a pie made of phyllo dough and filled with spinach and feta cheese.
