Faux finishes are great accents to an otherwise ordinary room. Usually, just one or two accent walls have the greatest impact. Behr has introduced their Bellagio faux technique; supplies and paints are available exclusively at Home Depot. This technique is quick and very simple to perform, and looks great when completed.
Instructions
1. Prime and paint your wall. You can paint all the walls in the room the same color, or you can paint the base color of your accent wall a different but complementary color. Give the paint a day or two to dry completely.
2. Pick out your Bellagio faux glaze. Use the store's handy flip-book of color samples, or pick your own and have the staff color match it. Your choice of glaze should complement the base color of the wall. Pick up your other supplies while at the store.
3. Roll out your drop cloth and get your workspace set up. Remember to stir the glaze well before pouring it into the pan.
4. Use your Bellagio faux brush to dip into the paint and immediately take the brush to the wall. Begin in an upper corner and make X patterns on a section of wall. The X technique works best, but any random pattern will do. When you've completed a manageable section (usually about a 3 foot by 3 foot section) stop and let it sit for about 15 minutes.
5. Take your trowel and press the side of it against the wall at an angle (the trowel is flexible). Gently scrape against the wall to knock down the white flecks that are in the glaze. Work in the same X like fashion until you have completed the whole area you glazed.
6. Continue along the rest of the wall and repeat Steps 4 and 5. Make sure to blend each new area into the previously knocked down areas.
7. Wait about 4 hours (depending on the temperature and humidity in your area) and then apply your next coat, if you choose to do one. You apply the second coat the same way as the first.
Tips Warnings
If the glaze sets up more quickly than the recommended time, start knocking it down early. You want to wait until the glaze is no longer shiny and wet looking; it should be tacky and look more matte. If it's taking a bit longer, try turning on a fan and waiting a while.
