5 year old Beckett NX oil burner locking out every two days


Five years ago, a plumber friend of mine and myself installed a Veismann Boiler with a Beckett NX gun. It has performed flawlessly running 86% efficient and saving me a ton of money in oil compared to my old American Standard Behemoth. Anyway, the past few weeks the gun has gone to lockout approximately every two days. I reset the gun and she fires right up. Any ideas on where to begin? Fuel looks good. Thanks in advance. Mark, has it been cleaned yearly since installed ? I installed a new screen, filter and nozzle this year but I did not vacuum it out. Welllll... you need to get that thing cleaned out, and then a proper burner service done which should include combustion testing. These are things that should be done yearly. Anytime you get into the fuel system you need to have a combustion test run to dial it in. Did the problem start after you cleaned and replaced the parts? No, Boiler was running well until a few weeks ago. No unusual amounts of oil being consumed.....problems just started. My guy moved so I have to find someone I trust. well, I had it professionally cleaned in march and the problem went away until yesterday. My wife said there was no hot water ( indirect hot water) so I wnt to the basement and it was back on Lock out. I reset it and it fired as it should and back to lock out. Did it again, and this time fired and ran.....a few hours later same thing. There has to be something going on with it seeing the flame. Any ideas? You can check the flame signal by depressing the red reset button after about 1 minute after burner is operating. Count the flashes and anything greater than two can give intermittent problem. You are only counting the flashes. The light will be on when you hit the button. Do not count that. Only count on and off flashes. Do not count the last one that stays on. Thanks Rbeck......I just read on Beckett site run this test.......I will try tonight. Regards I am getting 4 flashes which obviously indicates a problem. What is the typical cause of this? There can be a number of causes, what that test is doing is reading the resistance of the CAD CELL, which provides flame quality information to the control. Basically, that CAD cell 'sees' the flame. The resistance is proportional to the brightness of the flame that it sees. Possible causes: 1. Poor (or NO) combustion. If after you replaced the nozzle, you didn't do combustion testing, you likely have an issue with this. You need to have that thing cleaned and adjusted properly before putting any effort into troubleshooting further. If you are not at a 'known good' state, you'll be going in circles. Oil burners should be maintained YEARLY, and this should include COMBUSTION TESTING. 2. Defective or dirty CAD cell. 3. Loose wiring connections from CAD cell to control. 4. Defective control. I have had this same system for approx the same time frame, I have always done the maint myself but when this problem really starts to persist and I call in a pro, I always get the same answer, your system is running way more efficiant then mine I have had readings of 91% efficiant, but since the damn thing shuts down so often I lose the benefits of a high efficiancy system, it takes all that oil to get back up to tempature.... I think I am ready to just get a new oil burner, every technician that has been to my house never has anything good to say about the Beckett NX gun.... It has gotten to the point where I need to do 2 FULL maint a year, Nozzel, Filter, screen, wire brush the inside and vac out system.... I am going to replace the eye at this point and if that doesn't solve my problem then I am just going to jump off The Cliffs of Insanity wait...before you jump.......I had the boiler professionally serviced a few months back and the burn tests were done so something else was wrong.......I opened up the gun to check the connections and makes sure it was not dirty but noticed that the CAD cell didnt look straight at the small hole to sense the flame.....it as off to the left .....I simply gently pushed it back to where I felt it would get a better sight and lo and behold..........this dam thing is purring again. I kid you not....I eyeballed it and it is performing flawlessly! I dont know what it is but honestly, the setup I have ( Veissmann boiler with NX gun with indirect hot water) has really run efficiently and other than this....very reliably ( knocks on wood).
