Dead Bolt problem
Hey I need some advice and good ideas on fix a problem. I just moved into an apartment and the patio door does not have a bolt lock. I have found that the door knob that is on there can be broken into in about twenty seconds or less and the latch they have put on top is not the strongest either. I have talked to them and they don't want to drill a hole in the door to install a bolt lock but they would put a dead bolt in place of the door knob. That would be fine except that with out a door knob i dont have a way to pull the door open. Does anyone know of a door knob that works as a bolt lock that could be installed without drilling any more holes? Or maybe some other locking device that would be just as safe? Weiser used to make the contraption you want. I cannot remember the model or if it is still made. It is a combination entrance set and deadbolt in one unit. The latch closes normally like a entrance set and you can turn the key to extend the latch into a deadbolt. Gainsborough make a product called the Trilock that principally does the same thing. Although it uses a heavier footprint. Thanks for the help I will look into it. If you do think of the model let me know. Tell them to put a deadbolt in place of the doorknob, using 2 or longer screws to secure the strike plate, and get a small Sash Pull from Home Depot (it's just a little grip handle) to surface mount on the pull side, to pull the door closed.....(this is presuming that the door will stay shut on it's own, when the deadbolt's unlocked, just for convenience, when you're home). The Weiserbolt as Global referred to, is, I believe, no longer available, and anyway, I had one once, and it wasn't too handy, for a number of reasons. You can also get aftermarket surface mounted deadbolts that are fairly cheap easy to install if you need to keep your knob lock to latch the door closed....again, just be sure to use long strike plate screws. Thanks for your help. I have been looking for the weiserbolt and ever where that I look it is out of stock. Can I ask what was wrong with it? It sounds like the perfect solution but there must be a reason that it is not made anymore. Is there by any chance a lock made my someone else that does the same thing? The Gainsborough Trilock is essentially the same thing but uses a bigger installation, requiring additional hole drilling (so the trim fit on). You may not be able to get in the USA but I can get it from Australia for you. Gainsborough Hardware - Trilock Series Depends on how you will use the Weiserbolt; Used primarily as a deadbolt, with infrequent unlocking would not be as unhandy as the way I used mine: unlocking the deadbolt in the AM, frequent use as a passage set during the day, then deadbolting at nite. As a passage set, the ergonomics are poor---you must turn the knob about 1/4 or turn before the latch begins to retract, then a further 1/8 turn against stout spring action for full retraction. The latch had to be kept greased for good closing action, as the latch spring is, as mentioned, stout. Also, from a deterrance standpoint, a potential thief only sees what he thinks is a knoblock with no deadbolt on the door, so an attempted forced entry might be more likely. And lastly, despite it's heavy construction, it still had the standard Weiser key cylinder, known to be easily picked open. The trilock would be nice but the owner wont let me drill any new holes so I wont be able to use that one. Thanks for the offer though. I would be useing the weiser lock as an enterence to get in and out rather than going through the builiding to get into my apartment. I dont think that I am going to find one to buy though. Every where I look they are sold out. The Weiser website does not even have them on there. My best option right now is putting the bolt lock in the door knob hole. Well, surely the owners won't object to you putting a little sash pull on that takes a couple of 1/8 pilot holes to fasten it to the door with.....good luck! Check out the Schlage B250 nightlatch.
