Achieve a professional finish by spray-applying paint in a homemade auto paint booth.
The only way to achieve a truly professional auto-body paint finish is to use a spray application system. Sprayed paint is highly susceptible to dust, and can easily contaminate the surrounding area with fumes and unintended over-sprays. Build an auto paint booth in your own garage or workshop without spending a lot of money on materials. With the right preparation, you can build your own 24-foot by 8-foot by 8-foot auto paint booth in an afternoon. The dimensions can easily be adjusted to fit your vehicle and workspace.
Instructions
1. Sweep the garage or workshop area space designated for the auto paint booth clean of all debris, dust and dirt.
2. Join two 12-foot lengths of 1-inch diameter PVC pipe end-to-end through a four-way side outlet tee 1-inch-diameter PVC furniture fitting. Join the other two 12-foot lengths of pipe the same way. You now have two 24-foot lengths. Arrange these lengths parallel to each other on the floor, about eight feet apart.
3. Join the 24-foot lengths with three lengths of 8-foot PVC. Use three-way side outlet elbow 1-inch diameter PVC furniture fittings to join the ends of the 24-foot lengths. Slide the middle 8-foot brace into the existing four-way fittings. You now have a 24-foot by 8-foot footprint for your auto paint booth.
4. Insert two 8-foot lengths of PVC upright into the three-way fittings at one end of the footprint. Standing on a stepladder, screw two eye screws into the ceiling directly over the footprint. Tie a length of twine to each screw eye.
5. Join the top ends of the two upright PVC pipes with a third 8-foot length of pipe and two additional three-way fittings. Tie the loose twine ends around the topmost pipe to support the end of the structure. Repeat this procedure on the opposite end and at the midpoint of the auto paint booth. Connect all pipe fittings with lengths of PVC pipe.
6. Cut large sections of 6-millimeter construction-grade plastic to cover the ceiling of the auto-paint booth, and secure the ceiling-plastic to the PVC frame with duct tape. Overlap this plastic with large sections cut for the 24-foot by 8-foot sides of the PVC frame, and secure the side-wall plastic with duct tape. Don't tape one end of a side wall in order to provide an entryway.
7. Cut two sections of plastic to fit the 8-foot by 8-foot ends of the PVC frame and duct tape them in place. Position three large box fans on a low work bench inside one end of the paint booth. Cut out a rectangular piece of the plastic end-wall to fit the outline of the three box fans. Position the fans in the cut-out plastic so that they will pull exhaust from the booth and check that the electrical cords are outside the booth. Seal the fans against the cut edges of the plastic wall with duct tape.
8. Cut out three sections of the opposite end-wall to the exhaust fans to fit three intake dust filters. Tape the filters into the removed sections of plastic.
Tips Warnings
Do not operate an auto paint booth without exhaust fans running. Always exercise caution when using stepladders. Do not stand on the top step of a stepladder.
