Some species of fish feed on algae, according to the University of Illinois. Releasing these natural predators into a pond can help clear the pond of algae. The University of Kentucky mentions grass carp as one such fish.

For instance, the University of Kentucky points out that some states prohibit the addition of the grass carp to ponds or lakes. States such as Pennsylvania that do allow the carp may require a permit to use them, according to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
