Kosherstyle Restaurants

Bagels are typical of Jewish cuisine but are not necessarily kosher.

An Orthodox Rabbi or similar authority must authenticate a restaurant as kosher for the establishment to claim to be such. A kosher label verifies that the food served in the restaurant is prepared according to kosher standards. Kosher-style restaurants, conversely, may offer traditional Jewish-type cuisine; however, the restaurant does not necessarily abide by kosher laws.

Restaurant Types

A kosher-style restaurant encompasses any establishment that serves Jewish food such as gefilte fish, matzah balls and so on. Eateries can include bagel shops, pizzerias, steakhouses, cafes, diners, fast food outlets and formal sit-down restaurants.

Food Served

Kosher restaurants do not serve pork or rabbit, and the meat served must come from an animal that has been slaughtered in a certain way so as to avoid causing it pain. Blood is also removed from the animals after they are slaughtered. Dairy products must come from kosher animals; certain types of fish can be eaten such as tuna and salmon; however, shellfish is forbidden. Wine must also have been produced the kosher way -- the utensils used need to be cleaned and inspected in accordance to rabbinical law, and bottles may not be filled multiple times. Certain ingredients cannot be combined, such as milk and meat for instance, meaning utensils need to be kept separate in the kitchen. A kosher-style restaurant may choose to follow some of these rules, for example, not offering pork on the menu, as well as serve typical Jewish dishes.

Regulations

Kosher restaurants should close during Jewish holidays such as Shabbat. Kosher-style eateries can stay open during these holidays, and they don't need to register themselves as kosher, which allows them to offer whatever they want on the menu; the Dunkin' Donuts franchise officially became nonkosher in 2007 when it wanted to start offering ham in certain locations.

Locations

You will find kosher-style restaurant in areas with a large Jewish population. In the United States, New York has the highest number of kosher-style and kosher eateries.
