How Do You Make The Trademark Symbol On A Computer

Computer-generated symbols can be made in a number of ways.

The symbol "®" designates a trademark that is registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This symbol can be distinguished from the symbol "™," which is used to indicate trademarks that are not registered with the federal government. Both symbols can be easily made a number of ways, depending upon your operating system and word-processing software.

1. Open Word and pull down the "Insert" menu. Scroll down the items on the menu and click on "Symbol." A small window will open that presents options called "Symbols" or "Special Characters." The "Symbols" option presents a table of various symbols, and "®" and "™" can be found in the right side of the fifth row of the table in most versions of Word. Click on the symbol you wish to use and it will automatically appear in your Word document.

2. Make sure your formatting toolbar is open in Word. If necessary, pull down on "View menu," click on "Toolbars" and select "Formatting." Enter the letters "TM" into a Word document. Select them by mousing over them. Click "Superscript" on the formatting toolbar. This will convert "TM" into "™."

3. Press down the "Alt" key and enter 0174 on the numeric keypad. This technique works if your computer is running Windows. It is also useful if you are in a word-processing program other than Word that does not have the "Insert" feature.

4. Press the "Option" key in Apple computers running the OS operating system. While holding down the "Option" key, enter the letter "R." This action will cause the "®" symbol to appear.

5. Enter "®" if you are trying to produce the "®" symbol while coding in HTML.
