Fix Burned & Warped Cooking Pots

Many cooks have burned cooking pots at some point. There are several techniques you can employ to remove stains and burns from cooking pots. There is no easy way to repair dented or warped pots, so check with a welder, blacksmith or metal worker in your area to see if they offer those services.

Instructions

repair a burned cooking pot

1. Scrape out and throw away all food before you begin to clean a burned pot. If the pot is really hot, run it under cold water so you can handle it. To remove a caramel or sugar burn, fill the pot with water and boil it. This alone should release the sugar.

2. For other burns, place one cup of white vinegar and one good-sized squirt of dish soap into the pot, then fill two-thirds or the way with water. Bring the pot to a boil then turn the heat to medium, stirring the bottom occasionally to loosen the burnt crud from the bottom of the pan. Let pan continue at a low boil for 15 to 20 minutes.

3. Empty the pan and evaluate the bottom of the it. If it looks like most of the burn has lifted, you can attempt to wash it. If the pan still looks burned, repeat the boiling process.

4. If some residue remains on the pan, pour about three tablespoons of kosher salt into the pot and wet the salt with a couple drops of water. Using a sponge, work the wet salt into the burn, adding more salt if you need greater abrasive resistance.

5. Rinse the pot periodically. You will be able to remove any burned residue by boiling the vinegar-dish soap-water mixture in the pot and working salt into the affected area to rub out the crud, but this will take some time and effort.
