Attractive appetizers provide a mouthwatering display at parties and events.

Make your appetizer platters as attractive as they are tasty. Attractively displayed food is more appealing than food that is just heaped into the center of a plate. A well-thought-out arrangement also makes it easier for your guests to select and pick up the appetizers without touching all the food on the plate. Edible garnishes further add color to the platters, which is especially important for dressing up otherwise plain foods. Group like foods together on several platters instead of trying to fit everything onto one large plate. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Determine your appetizer groupings. Pair cheese and crackers together on one plate, fruits and vegetables on another, or cheese and meat on a third.

2. Create a centerpiece for the platter. Line a small bowl with a frilly lettuce. Use lettuce leaves long enough to emerge above the bowl rim, camouflaging the bowl.

3. Fill the bowl with dip, pickles or small berries. Place the centerpiece of the platter first, setting it in the center.

4. Divide the platter into sections, radiating out from the center. Assign a different food to each section, alternating colors and textures as much as possible.

5. Arrange the foods in their assigned sections. If using sliced food, such as cheese or meat slices, fan the items out. Insert decorative toothpicks into chunked foods, such as cheese chunks or fruit chunks, before arranging them in their sections. The picks make it easier for guests to select an item while adding a decorative touch.

6. Garnish the edges of the platter with radish roses, small berries, edible flowers, lettuce, parsley or cherry tomatoes. Use a garnish that adds color to the tray. Brightly colored garnishes complement neutral-colored foods such as cheese and crackers. Deep green or pastel garnishes, such as parsley or flowers, complement the bright colors of vegetable and fruit trays.
