Double pane vs triple pane windows

Double Pane vs Triple Pane windows

Does anyone know if there is a big difference between double pane and triple pane windows? I am trying to block out road noise in my house am leaning towards replacing my windows (currently have Pella Double Pane casement windows, ten years old). Thanks for any input! Contact the manufacturers you are interested in and ask for STC specs. You will need size and type of windows to get a good answer. If you go to a store and they look at you funny when you mention STC you need a different sales person. Pella may be able to give you the specs for your existing windows. Triple vs double is not necessarily better, all depends on how it is constructed, thickness and type of glass, etc. Also, installation can make a difference. Did they foam and caulk the window to framing area or just stuff it with fiberglass? I'd also recommend checking what other noise reducing options you have. For example many homeowners are able to reduce the noise by simply planting tall and thick hedges in the yard to block part of the noise or installing clear glass (expensive option) wall/railing. You may also check if the walls are properly insulated. I suspect in PA you already would have known if they aren't, but worth checking anyway. Maybe try installing those temporary shrink plastic membranes over the window casings and see if the noise is reduced. It's not the same thing as a triple pane, but at least will give you an idea what it's going to be like? That would be one huge expense with little gain to show for it. Agreed. Triple pane windows do not necessarily out perform dual pane windows in sound blocking. If the triple pane and dual pane both use the same thickness glass and have the same airspace width (3/4 dual pane and two 3/8 for the triple, for example), then sound performance will be pretty much identical. As joe said one huge expense with little potential gain. Am replacing a 4' x 6' window with a half round on top with radius of 3'. The difference between double and triple glass is $210. The double is rated at .31 and the triple at .35. Is this enough to justify the price? Pella 350 window with argon gas and sunshield. Thanks for the input! Rick Rmeyer, what number are you giving us? u-value? or STC? If it is u-value (represented by a numerical decimal), a triple pane should have a better u-value than that if all other things are the same and both have argon/sunshield. If it is STC, those numbers are whole numbers. Such as 31 and 34.
