Natural Algae Killer For Ponds

While chemicals can kill algae and other aquatic weeds in ponds, the University of Kentucky warns that they can also harm humans and other species if used carelessly. In many cases natural methods can kill algae and keep it at manageable levels.

Competing Organisms

Algae thrive on basic nutrients in pond water, such as carbon nitrogen and oxygen. According to the University of Illinois, the addition of competing organisms in the water can kill algae by depriving the algae of these nutrients. Bacterial products and floating plants both compete with algae in this manner.

Predators

Some species of fish feed on algae, according to the University of Illinois. Releasing these natural predators into a pond can help clear the pond of algae. The University of Kentucky mentions grass carp as one such fish.

Considerations

People wishing to kill algae through natural methods may have to follow certain local regulations. For instance, the University of Kentucky points out that some states prohibit the addition of the grass carp to ponds or lakes. States such as Pennsylvania that do allow the carp may require a permit to use them, according to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
