Remove Salad Dressing Stains On Fabric

Most salad dressings are oil-based.

Salad dressing stains are among the most frustrating to deal with. Most salad dressings are oil-based, and those are the hardest kinds of stains to treat. Still, new technologies and old-fashioned elbow grease will remove dressing stains if you catch them right away. The most important thing to remember when you treat dressing stains is to read the label on your clothing or upholstery. It does no good to remove the salad dressing stain if you ruin the garment in the process.

Instructions

Remove Salad Dressing from Clothing

1. Blot the stain by pressing it between two folded paper towels. Keep using fresh paper towels until all of the moisture has been removed.

2. Sprinkle talcum powder or corn starch onto the stain, covering it completely. Press the powder in with a clean paper towel and let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes.

3. Shake the excess powder or cornstarch off into the sink, and blot away the rest with a clean paper towel.

4. Spray the stain with a pre-treating solution that is safe for the fabric. Let it soak for the full amount of time the manufacturer recommends.

5. Launder the stained fabric, either in the washing machine or by hand in the sink, in the hottest water that the fabric will safely tolerate.

Remove Salad Dressing from Upholstery:

6. Removing salad dressing from upholstery is a challenge.

Blot up as much of the stain as you can by pressing on it with clean paper towels. Do not rub at the stain, or you can damage your upholstery.

7. Dampen a paper towel with isopropyl alcohol. Blot at the stain with the dampened paper towel, making sure to use a clean part of the paper towel as soon as the one you are using is discolored by the salad dressing residue.

8. Apply a few drops of dry-cleaning solvent to the stain. Blot it back up with a clean paper towel. Repeat until all the paper towel comes up clean.

9. Fill a small, clean spray bottle with water. Add a few drops of clear, bleach-free detergent and swirl the bottle to mix them. Spray the salad dressing stain and blot it with clean paper towels.

10. Fill your second spray bottle with clear water and use it to rinse the laundry detergent out of your upholstery. Spray it well, and blot with paper towels.

11. Mix together a 1 to 1 solution of water and white vinegar in your third spray bottle, and shake it gently to mix it. Spray this solution onto your salad dressing stain and blot with clean paper towels until all of the detergent and salad dressing residue has come up.
