Paint A Walleye

Paint a Walleye

Fish seem to capture our imaginations beyond simply making good food or sport. Their strange but elegant shape, their scales that shimmer in the sunlight and their elusive nature all make fish excellent subjects for artists. The Walleye is a fish of particular interest to capture on canvas. With its large size, expressive mouth and dangerous-looking fins, the walleye is a great candidate for painting. This fish also benefits from being relatively simple in shape and color, which is a great advantage to beginning painters.

Instructions

1. Draw a long, thin oval for the body of the walleye. Point this shape diagonally so that the left side is pointing toward the upper left corner. Add two triangles on the the back of the fish for fins. Add a triangle to the right end of the body for the tail. Add the dorsal fins with two triangles to the underside of the fish. Add a small circle for the eye on the upper-left-hand side.

2. Add two sideways "V" shapes below and to the right of the eye for gills. Add a sideways "V" shape to the front of the fish to create the open mouth. Add two small triangles to the top and bottom of the mouth to add the nose and chin.

3. Erase your guidelines. Add a two parallel lines to the inside edge of the mouth. Add a curved line to the base of the tail to show where the tail and body meet.

4. Color the background blue. Paint the top half of the body green. Paint the middle section of the walleye yellow. Paint the bottom section of the walleye beige. Paint the mouth white. Paint the inside of the gills as well as under the chin pink. Paint the fins gray. Paint the eyeball white and pupil black.

5. Dip your brush into some yellow paint and lightly dab the point of the brush across the upper body to create the impression of scales. Dip your brush in white and do the same for the middle section of the body. Dip your brush into the beige paint and once into a cup of water to dilute it. Spread this paint upward from the belly of the fish into the yellow area to blend the two colors.

6. Dip your brush into yellow paint and into the water again to dilute it. Bleed the yellow into the green with small upward strokes. Paint seven diagonal while lines on the top two fins to show where the light catches the bones of the fins.
