Make Rice Cooker Bread

Rice cooker bread lets you prepare a tasty, crusty homemade loaf without turning on the oven and heating up a small apartment. This recipe is perfect for dorm-dwellers without access to a full kitchen. Minimize the mess with this one-bowl recipe and put the rice cooker to good use.

Instructions

1. Read through all the instructions before beginning. Put the yeast into a small bowl with warm water and a pinch of sugar. Let the yeast proof for about 10 minutes.

2. Place the flour, salt and sugar into the rice cooker. Add the milk to the dry ingredients. Pour the proofed yeast into the mixture. Combine the ingredients and form the dough into a ball after kneading it for 10 minutes.

3. Add a little flour to adjust dough that is too wet. Flour hands to prevent dough from sticking.

4. Cut the soft butter into small pieces. Work the butter into the dough until it's completely distributed and no bits of it are visible. Cover the dough with a clean dishtowel.

5. Allow the dough to sit in the rice cooker in a draft-free area for an hour to rise. Note that the dough doubles in size. Lift the dough from the rice cooker and slam it back into the bowl 3 or 4 times until the dough is reduced to its original size.

6. Set the timer on the rice cooker for one hour and bake the dough. Check the bread after 30 minutes to make sure it doesn't burn on the underside. Turn the bread over and allow it to bake for the same length of time as the first side.

7. Turn the bread a third time. Continue to bake until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the top center. Expect a total cooking/baking time of 1 1/2 to 3 hours, depending on the appliance.

8. Remove the loaf from the rice cooker. Allow the bread to cool before serving.
