Make A Fortune Cookie

Fortune cookies are a fun way to add to a party. They can be a cookie treat with fun messages, or you can use them to deliver scavenger hunt clues. There are different ways to make fortune cookies, with slightly different results.

Instructions

Making the Batter

1. Write fortunes on strips of paper.

2. Decide if you will use the frying pan method or the oven method for cooking the batter. If you are using the oven method, lightly grease a cookie sheet with butter or oil. If you are using the frying pan method, grease the surface with a few drops of cooking oil. Non-stick surfaces don't need to be greased.

3. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit or have a frying pan ready over low heat.

4. Mix together: 2 egg whites, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract, 4 tablespoons of sugar and one teaspoon of cornstarch. If you are using the frying pan method, add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil. Gradually add up to 1/2 cup of all purpose flour until the batter is thick enough to form a circle when poured from a spoon.

5. Using the oven method, pour two or three circles of batter onto the cookie sheet. This will be about one quarter to one third of your batter. The circles should be about 3 inches in diameter and at least a couple of inches apart. Place sheet in the middle rack of the oven and bake 5 minutes or until the cookie edges are golden brown.

6. Using the frying pan method, pour one cookie onto the heated surface, tilting the pan around to make the cookie round and about three inches in diameter. Flip the cookie once the edges start to look dry, after about 3 minutes. Cook on this side one more minute.

Folding the Cookie

7. Use hot cookies, straight from the pan or oven, and work quickly before the cookie hardens.

8. Lift the cookie off the cooking surface with a large spatula.

9. Place the cookie on a clean, dry surface.

10. Gently place the fortune in the center of the cookie, just off to one side.

11. Fold the cookie over the fortune so that the edges of the circle meet, but the fold does not create a crease.

12. Bring the ends of the half circle together, pulling them away from the round side.

13. Place cookie in a muffin tin so it will keep its shape while it cools.
