Know What Wine To Buy

Wine can be a great addition to any meal. You can also enjoy a tasty wine while watching a movie, hanging out with friends or simply sitting on your couch. As with any beverage, it's important that you purchase the correct wine. There are several things one should consider before visiting a local liquor store or winery. Once you know what wine you should buy, you will be able to enjoy both the event as well as the wine you are drinking.

Instructions

1. Attend local wine tasting events to learn what wines you enjoy. This is especially important if you are inexperienced with different types of wine. You can try all types of wine at these events, which will be very helpful when making your purchase. The only way to know if you prefer a dry wine to a fruity wine is to try different kinds of both.

2. Read up on different types of wines. There are all kinds of magazines and websites that offer information on wines from around the world as well as wines made locally. The Wine Spectator website ("Wine Spectator" is an excellent wine-related magazine) is full of excellent and free information regarding different wines. Click the "Editors' Picks" tab at the top of the page to read about the different "Wines of the Day" that are suggested.

3. Visit a store that has a wide variety of wines. This will help to prevent you from buying a wine simply because there were "no other options." Larger stores will sell both expensive and inexpensive wine, which can help you save some money on your purchase.

4. Speak with a person working at the store. Explain whether your buying the wine for an event such as a dinner or just for yourself to enjoy at home. Tell the person about different types of wine you've tried before and what you liked and disliked about those wines. This individual should then be able to point out different wines that would be just right for you.

5. Try to match the flavor of wine with the flavor of food that is being served. Lighter wines are usually drunk with lighter meals, while sweeter wines are enjoyed with dessert dishes. An easy way to match wine with a meal or dish is to use the Food and Wine Matching Engine on the Wine Lovers Page or the Wine and Food Matcher on Natalie MacLean's website. Both of these sites suggest different wines based upon the meal you'll be having.
