Make Bubblegum

Make Bubblegum

Bubblegum, a delicious, chewy treat that can be enjoyed by people all ages, can be made at home using ingredients from the supermarket and specialty craft and cooking stores. This can be a fun project to enjoy with a child. This recipe takes about 20 minutes to prepare and yields approximately half a pound of bubble gum.

Instructions

1. Combine 1/3 cup gum base, 2½ tablespoons of corn syrup, 1 teaspoon of glycerin, and ½ teaspoon of citric acid in a microwave safe bowl. Place in the microwave and heat on high for one minute.

2. Remove the bowl from the microwave and stir. If the mixture isn't completely melted, heat for an additional 20 seconds, or until a soft, gooey consistency is obtained.

3. Drape a flat cotton sheet over a flat work surface, such as a table top. Pour ¼ cup of powdered sugar onto the sheet. Form a small mound and create a depression in the center.

4. Add six drops of flavoring into the gum mixture and stir well. Pour the gum mixture into the depression in the powdered sugar. Knead the two together, adding more powdered sugar as needed. Continue for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the mixture is stiff.

5. Roll the gum mixture into a long cylindrical cord shape. Cut into bite sized pieces using scissors. Coat each individual piece in powdered sugar. To store, wrap pieces individually in wax paper.
