Pack Frozen Food For A Car Ride

When traveling by car and taking food with you, sometimes the best option is to keep the food frozen. Not only is there less risk for the food spoiling, but there is also a lot less chance for mess if the food tips over or gets bumped around. If you are planning on traveling and taking frozen food with you, here are some tips on keep the food fresh, frozen and edible for when you get to your destination.

Instructions

1. Evaluate the original packaging that the frozen food is in. Make sure that there are no holes in the bag or box and that it is fully sealed. The more tightly the food is sealed, the more it will stay frozen without any problems. If there are any broken seals, holes in the bag or tears in the box, put it into another bag or small plastic container to make sure that it stays colder. In addition to putting it into an additional wrapping, put a layer of clear plastic wrap around it in case the food leaks.

2. Wrap the entire package of food in newspaper. Take a few sheets of newspaper and line them up evenly together. Put the package of food in the center and wrap it as though you are wrapping up a gift. Tape up the edges. The newspaper will keep the food colder and act as insulation. However, if you are going to be keeping the items on ice during travel, put the entire package in a bag so that the water doesn’t soak through the newspaper.

3. Use an insulated bag or a cooler to transport your food. Large amounts of food, food that you will be traveling with for a very long distance, or extremely perishable food items are best carried in a cooler with ice all around it. An insulated bag is best for carrying a couple of small food items for short distances that don’t need to be on ice. Make sure that you completely seal up the cooler or the insulated bag for travel. Any type of heat getting into the cooler or bag can make the food start to thaw out.

4. Put the cooler or insulated bag in a proper place in your car. Coolers should be on a flat surface in a car so that there is no chance of them popping open. Insulated bags should be on a surface in a car where there is no chance of them sliding around or tipping over. Make sure that they are located out of direct sunlight, preferably covered with a blanket until you reach your destination.
