Make Flavored Body Oil

Body oils can be absorbed quickly and maintain the skin's moisture if applied after bathing. Edible, flavored body oil is preferable because the skin will naturally absorb the oil. Making your own body oil product means you are nourishing your skin with nutrients and tailoring the chemistry to your specific needs.

1. Carrier oils have different properties that react in a unique way to your body type. Many Ayurvedic recipes can give you a template for edible massage oils, but the best way to design the perfect combination is by trial and error, as your interests will change. Be diligent when mixing essential oils about recording the measurements and combinations. Know what you're blending into your body oil to ensure that any reaction is identifiable.

2. After selecting the kinds of carrier oils and essential oil blends, sanitize the containers. Glass containers are ideal. Boiling the containers in water for a few minutes will eliminate bacteria. If you use a cleaner, rinse thoroughly to ensure that there is no cleaning residue left on the container to mix with your body product. Lids and containers need to sanitized. If you discard a combination of carrier and essential oil, you must sanitize the container again before reuse. Never return oil to the stock bottle.

3. Dried herbs from your garden can work to infuse the body oil with scents and tastes. Mold can grow into the oil if there is any moisture in the plants when you immerse them into the carrier oil. Drying herbs in the hot sun, or in a warm oven readies them for infusion. Again, research the plant properties before attempting to apply your oil. Know what herb you are drying. Label the product as it infuses for up to six months.

4. As you mix the carrier oils with essential oils, start with small amounts like a few drops. It is not possible to remove the essential oil if, after mixing, the taste is too strong. Each taste/scent is a matter of preference. Mixing the oils to experiment collectively and recognizing your favorites creates a superior product.

5. Body oils will cure within any time frame of one day to one week. Avoid leaving the oils in the sun or a hot storage area. These homemade products do not have any preservatives. Date the body oil and discard after one year.
