Fix A Burnedout Signal Bulb

Avoid a fix-it ticket or a trip to the auto-repair shop by doing this simple repair yourself. It is often no more difficult than changing a lightbulb at home.

Instructions

1. Determine whether you access the bulb from the outside (by removing the plastic light cover) or from inside the trunk or under the hood.

2. If the bulb is accessed from the outside, remove the screws that secure the light cover. Usually this will only require a Phillips screwdriver. On some cars, you may need a socket and ratchet.

3. If the bulb is accessed from inside the trunk or under the hood, there will probably be a plastic protective cover. Twist the knob or tab on the cover to loosen it.

4. Remove the burned-out bulb by pushing it in and turning counterclockwise.

5. Take the bulb to an auto-parts store to get the right replacement.

6. Clean the inside of the bulb socket if it is dirty with a wire brush, or a small piece of sandpaper, and a rag.

7. Screw in the new bulb by pushing it in and turning clockwise.

8. Test the bulb (turn on the device) before replacing the light cover.

9. Replace the light cover and tighten the screws.
