Cook Peanuts

According to the National Peanut Board, one 12 oz. jar of peanut butter contains around 540 peanuts.

Peanuts are a popular snack. In fact, the National Peanut Board reports the average person in the United States eats more than 6 lbs. of peanuts a year, including peanut butter products. Peanuts don't just taste good. They contain over 30 nutrients and have more protein, niacin and folate than any other nut. The next time you buy peanuts, try something different. Buy raw peanuts in the shell and cook them. One way to cook the peanuts is to boil them. You may love the taste so much that you never buy roasted peanuts in a jar again.

Instructions

1. Wash the peanuts before cooking them. Place the peanuts in a large sieve. Run cool water over the peanuts to wash off any dirt. Leave the peanuts in the shells.

2. Place the peanuts in a large pot. Add 1/4 cup of salt. Pour 4 cups of water over the peanuts. You may have to add a little more water to ensure that the peanuts are covered completely.

3. Turn the stove to high heat. Bring the peanuts to a boil. You do not need to stir them.

4. Cover the pot and lower the heat to medium so that the water doesn't boil over. Cook the peanuts for two hours. Take one peanut out of the water. Crack it open and taste. You can continue cooking if you desire softer peanuts. Test every 10 minutes until you have achieved the desired texture.

5. Remove the peanuts from the stove. Drain them in a sieve.
