Saltines are inexpensive and versatile.
Doctors recommend eating saltines to relieve nausea and upset stomach because they are dry and salty, and settle the stomach. Medicinal purposes aside, they have a place in every course from appetizer to dessert with a little creativity.
Appetizer
For an appetizer, brush the saltines with melted butter, top with grated cheese and cayenne pepper. Place them under the broiler until the cheese is bubbly and serve. Omit the cayenne pepper and this makes a quick lunch or snack for children.
Soup & Salad
Crumble saltines up and put them in soup to thicken the broth. They are especially good with chili and chicken soup. Just be careful you do not add much salt to the soup as the saltines will add a considerable amount.
To make a salad using saltines, add tomatoes, pepper, onions, cheese and mayonnaise and chill before serving.
Main Course
Main course uses include crumbling them up for use as a coating on chicken, fish or pork or crushing them finely and adding to a meatloaf. Combine saltines with chicken, cream soup, broccoli, mayonnaise, lemon juice and butter to make a chicken broccoli casserole.
Dessert
Saltines are so versatile they even work for dessert. Melting some butter and sugar, pouring it over the saltines and baking for 10 minutes before adding the toppings makes for a sweet, yet salty, dessert.
