Send A Wine Gift Basket

Sending a wine basket depends upon state laws.

A wine gift basket can be just the thing to give the wine-lover on your list. Most vendors offer standard baskets in various price ranges, but you can also customize the basket to the recipient's tastes in wine, edibles and accessories. In order to ship the basket, you must meet certain legal conditions, which vary by state. Alcohol shipping laws date back to the repeal of Prohibition, so the shipping process depends on the destination.

Instructions

1. Decide if you will order "off-site" or "on-site." "Off-site" refers to orders placed by phone, fax or the Internet. Ordering from a winery tasting room ar a wine shop is an "on-site" order.

2. Ordering a wine basket via the Internet is an off-site order.

Select the type of basket you want to send. Choose from pre-packaged baskets, or customize the basket to the recipient's taste. Besides wine, baskets often include gourmet candies or crackers, spreads or wine accessories.

3. Provide information about the recipient's location. Vendors will ask for information such as billing and shipping addresses, preferred method of shipment and recipient's information. If the recipient's address is in a state that doesn't allow wine shipments from another state, you will not be able to complete the order. If your recipient lives in a state that allows wine shipments, you can proceed with the order.

4. Affix a special shipping label. Special shipping labels require an adult to sign for the wine basket when it arrives at its destination.
