Microwave Grill Instructions

Much like their electric counterparts, microwave grills allow for indoor grilling of meats and vegetables. Unlike electric models, the foods cooked in a microwave grill will be ready to eat in six or seven minutes, rather than the 15 to 20 needed by the electric grill. There are a number of microwave grills on the market, but they all work in the same basic way.

Grill Basics

The microwave grill you have may have one, two or more parts. The basic grill is a single grill plate. This plate may be removable from the base or it may be a single unit. More elaborate grills may have grill plates on the bottom and on a lid section of the device. Some microwave grills have a gentle slope and a grease trench around the actual plate to catch dripping from the foods cooked.

Preheating the Grill

The most important task of microwave grilling is to preheat the grill before cooking foods. Depending on the manufacturer of the grill, you will need to preheat the grill in the microwave on high for one to three minutes. This will give the foods you cook the normal grill hash marks and make the actual cooking time of the foods less than if used without preheating.

Cooking the Foods

Once you have the grill preheated, cooking the food is a simple matter. The grill is returned to the microwave and cooked for a preselected amount of time. For example, hot dogs and most vegetables will take three minutes or less to cook. Steaks, pork chops and chicken may take as long as seven minutes to cook thoroughly.

Some Tips for Microwave Grilling

Cut vegetables into slices or smaller chunks before grilling in the microwave. They will cook evenly and faster if not left whole. Debone any meat you plan to grill in the microwave and attempt to keep steaks, chops and chicken to less than 1 inch thick. As with vegetables, the meat will grill evenly. Be sure to use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of any meat you cook in the microwave.
