What Is A Relish Dish

A relish will compliment a meal and add flavour.

A relish dish is made up of several small savory items, intended as a side dish, that accompanies other main dishes. The traditional relish tray is a glass tray, divided into segments of three or more. Each segments contains a different relish.

Considerations

If you are asked to bring a relish dish to a function, check to see what is expected, there is a wide variation of what someone might have in mind. Some may intend it for a starter, in which case cut up vegetables and a dip would make a good appetizer or cubed cheeses, pickles and savory crackers would also be appropriate.

Ideas

If you do not have a relish tray, a large plate will do fine. Lay a bed of dark green lettuce on the bottom, and add your chosen relishes in clusters. Use different colors when choosing your items. Divide each cluster with a carrot stick or sliced red pepper to separate the items and add color.

Easy Relish Items

Think savory when choosing items. Look in the condiment section at the supermarket for ideas. Pearl onions, mustard chutney, sliced pickled beets, olives, pickled red cabbage and many more relishes are found in glass jars. Look in the deli section, relish items are often on show there. Easy fresh items to add, are small pieces of cauliflower, sliced cucumber, cherry tomatoes, sliced radishes, spring onions and sliced peppers.
