Pruning Cilantro In An Aerogarden

The Aerogarden allows you to grow herbs such as cilantro in your own kitchen year round. It has built in plant lighting, an aeroponic optimizing chamber which suspends the plant roots in air at 100% humidity, and a control panel that controls the light, water and nutrients based on the specific plants or herbs you are plant. Growing herbs in the Aerogarden is something anyone can do, no green thumb needed. The only trick to growing cilantro in your the Aerogarden is knowing properly prune the herb so it does not bolt.

Instructions

1. Plant your cilantro pod in your Aerogarden. Cilantro does very well indoors because it bolts in temperatures over seventy-five degrees. Your cilantro will begin to sprout within a week and will be ready to harvest within five to six weeks.

2. Prune your cilantro by cutting one third of the way down the herb. Make sure that there are leaves on the remaining two thirds of the plant. If cutting the top third removes all leaves you will make your cut directly above the last set of leaves on the stem.

3. Use the top third of your cilantro in the next week or freeze it for later use.

4. Continue to prune your cilantro once a week. If you do not you risk the leaves turning lacy and the plant going to seed. This is known as bolting. When cilantro bolts the leaves become inedible and it produces seeds known as coriander. The only upside to the bolting is that you can use the coriander in your cooking.
