Gatorade is a sports drink produced by PepsiCo that aids in hydration and claims to enhance athletic performance. Gatorade (in liquid and powdered forms) is specifically formulated to rehydrate the body during and after physical activity by replenishing fluids, carbohydrates and electrolytes. One 8-oz. serving of Gatorade provides 52 calories, 14g of carbohydrates, 110mg of sodium and 30mg of potassium. But recipes for homemade substitutes exists, in both liquid and powder.
Switchel
Switchel is the name for a common, centuries-old homemade beverage (and Gatorade precursor) comprised of water, vinegar, molasses and honey. While not a powder, it has a number of other advantages (notably, it's easy and cheap to make). For one gallon of switchel, combine 14 cups (3-1/2 quarts) of water with 1 cup of molasses, 1/2 cup of honey, 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar or other strong vinegar plus 1 to 2 tbsp. ground ginger. Stir all ingredients until thoroughly mixed.
Powdered Drink-Mix Recipe
Combining unsweetened powdered drink mix with salt and sugar is an alternative to Gatorade powder. This recipe tastes more like Gatorade than Switchel and is less expensive than Gatorade powder mix. To make this substitute, combine one envelope of unsweetened powdered soft drink mix (flavor and brand of your choice, as long as it makes two quarts), with 10 tbsp. of sugar and 3/4 tsp. of granulated salt. Store mixture in an air-tight container, such as a resealable bag. Mix with up to two liters of water when ready to use as a drink.
Imitation Gatorade Powder Recipe
Another common and inexpensive way to recreate Gatorade powder at home is to combine one envelope of any unsweetened flavored drink mix with 1/2 tsp. granulated salt, 1/4 cup refined sugar, 1/4 cup granular fructose and 1/2 tsp. citric acid. Store mixture in an airtight container such as a resealable bag. Mix with up to two liters of water for use as a drink.
