Shuck Pomegranates

Pomegranate juice is used to make grenadine, a popular cocktail ingredient.

The pomegranate is a round fruit with leathery skin ranging in color from yellow tinged with pink to deep red. The inside of the fruit is filled with membranes and tissue that create compartments. These compartments are filled with sweet and juicy edible sacs containing one seed each. Pomegranates are high in antioxidants, potassium, fiber, vitamins A, C and E and are a wise addition to a healthy diet. The process of shucking, or seeding, a pomegranate can be messy; however, there are seeding methods to help avoid this.

Instructions

1. Place the pomegranate on the cutting board. Use a sharp knife to quarter the pomegranate by cutting through the leathery skin but not the membranes or the seeds themselves. Use your hands to separate the quarters.

2. Place one pomegranate quarter seed side down in the palm of your hand and hold that hand over a bowl.

3. Use the wooden spoon to repeatedly hit the skin of the pomegranate, thus releasing the seeds into the bowl. If pieces of membrane fall into the bowl as well, simply remove them by hand. Repeat for each pomegranate quarter.
