History


A common Mexican dish, guacamole dates back to the Aztecs who prized this high-fat-and-protein fruit as a departure from their largely low-fat diets, Gourmet Sleuth reports.








Healthy Fat (Avocado)


Unsaturated fats, such as those in avocados, can lower blood cholesterol levels and stabilize heart rhythms. They're rich in 20 vitamins, especially B, E and K, and lutein, which may protect eyes. They're also high in fiber.


Added Fiber


A half-cup of salsa added to a mashed avocado represents one serving of fruit or vegetables and provides antioxidant vitamins, potassium and other compounds that protect the heart and improve overall health, registered dietician Karen Collins says.


Weight Loss








Although we've reduced our fat consumption by 13 percent since the 1960s, the obesity rate has risen by 21 percent since then. The culprit is not the amount, but the type of fat we eat, the Harvard School of Public Health reports. Avocados' monosaturated fats contribute to good health and quell hunger longer than carbohydrates do.
