Patriotically decorated pastries are perfect for Independence Day.
The Fourth of July is a holiday that celebrates the United States' independence. It is often celebrated with fireworks, parades and barbecues. Red, white and blue decorations highlight the patriotic festivities. Serve an American-themed angel food cake at your holiday event. Add decorations to the top of your cake to celebrate the holiday or bake a specially colored cake to match the American flag.
Berry Flag Theme
Make an American flag using frosting, blueberries and strawberries. Frost a baked angel cake with white icing. Fill the upper left-hand portion of the top of the cake with blueberries. Make horizontal stripes using whole or sliced strawberries. The final product should look like an American flag. You can also use white icing, blueberries and strawberries to make a festive red, white and blue angel food cake without replicating the flag. Simply distribute the toppings as you see fit.
Toothpick Flags
Add tiny American flags to the top of your angel food cake. These toppers consist of a paper flag affixed to the top of a toothpick. These decorations are available at craft stores or specialty food stores. You can also make your own by drawing and coloring small flags on paper and then taping or gluing them to the top of regular toothpicks. Plant the flags around the top of your cake for a simple and easy festive touch.
Food Coloring Cake
Add food coloring to your angel food cake batter. Prepare your cake batter normally, then evenly distribute it to three separate dishes. Stir a few drops of red food coloring into one dish and a few drops of blue food coloring into the second dish. Leave the third dish plain. Choose one of the batters to spoon into the cake pan first. Make sure the entire bottom of the pan is covered. Choose a second batter to cover the first. Top it off with the final batter. Bake the cake as you would regularly. The finished cake will be patriotically colored.
Sparklers
Put a few 8- or 10-inch sparklers on the top of your finished angel food cake. This festive touch creates a presentation that matches the fireworks that typically accompany the Fourth of July. Don't put on too many sparklers; they can create small black specks that are nontoxic but might be visible and bothersome if too many land on your cake's frosting. Be safe in handling the sparklers and extinguish them once the cake is presented and ready to eat.
