What Can a Diabetic Eat?
Diabetics need to eat balanced meals, which are meals that are low in fat, low in sugar, high in complex carbohydrates, and include good choices of protein. Diabetics can eat most any type of food, but the key is moderation. They must learn that if they eat cake, they need to eliminate carbohydrates somewhere else.
Proteins
Proteins should not exceed six ounces a day and should be lean meats or low fat products.
Carbohydrates
High fiber carbohydrates are the diabetic's best choice. Choose whole wheat breads, pasta, and rice. Look for fresh fruit and fresh starchy vegetables. Limit carbohydrates to approximately 150 grams per day depending upon your requirements.
Dairy
Dairy should be low fat or non-fat. Consider skim milk, low fat yogurt, and low fat cheeses. Try to eat three servings of dairy a day.
Fats
Avoid saturated fats that have more than one gram per serving and foods that contain more than a total fat content of three grams.
Desserts
Eat desserts in moderation. Read labels and avoid high fat and high carbohydrate contents.
