Make Easy Spanish Rice

You can make Spanish rice in a single frying pan.

Spanish rice is a rich dish easily identifiable by its red or sometimes yellow color. These colors come from the tomatoes, chicken broth and, sometimes, saffron used in its preparation. While some restaurant Spanish rice is considered an expensive dish due to the extended amount of time some chefs use in preparing it and the addition of expensive saffron, you can easily make Spanish rice in your home kitchen with only a single pan.

Instructions

1. Prepare the ingredients. Since Spanish rice is a dish prepared in a single pan, have everything prepared so that it can be added exactly when needed. Dice the tomatoes and onion. Prepare whatever meat you will be using in a way that leaves it soft and in small chunks. For example, if you are using shrimp, peel and devein them. If you are using sausage, dice it into bite-size pieces.

2. Heat the olive oil in the frying pan. Set the burner to medium to medium-high heat. Add several tablespoons of olive oil to the pan and heat the olive oil until fragrant.

3. Cook the meat or seafood in the pan. Cook according to the directions for the meat you are using, but you do not need to cook all the way through. Cook until the outside of the ingredient you are using has noticeably changed color, indicating that at least the outside is cooked. This should take five to 10 minutes.

4. Add the onion, tomato, salt and pepper to the pan. Stir them in with the meat. The amount of salt and pepper you add depend on personal preference. Do not worry about how much you add now, as you can make additions later; it is better to underestimate than overestimate. Cook for five minutes.

5. Add the rice, chicken broth and wine to the pan. If you are using saffron, add it as well. Observe the amount of liquid in the pan, and add water until the liquid level is slightly higher than the height of the rice and other dry ingredients. Let the water liquid come to a boil.

6. Cook until the liquid level reduces. The dish will be finished when the liquid level has almost completely diminished.

7. Adjust the seasonings. Taste the dish and add more salt or pepper if needed.
