Keep Cereal From Getting Stale

Cereal will keep for months if stored properly.

When you open a bag of cereal, you expose the food inside to air that contains humidity, which over time will cause the cereal to go stale. In addition to humidity in the air, varied temperature can also cause cereal to adopt an undesirable flavor and consistency. If you live in a particularly hot, cold or humid climate, an open bag of cereal can go stale before you have a chance to eat a second bowl. Rather than throwing away the ruined cereal and wasting money, take steps to prevent it from going stale.

Instructions

1. Open a bag of fresh cereal.

2. Pour the cereal into a clean, sealable plastic container. The container's lid should fit tightly so it forms an airtight seal.

3. Place the lid onto the container, ensuring it seals tightly around all the edges. If the lid will not fit properly, pour the cereal into a different container with a fitting lid.

4. Store the container in a dark, cool place such as a cabinet.

5. Open the container only when you would like to pour a bowl of cereal. Do not leave the container open for any longer than necessary and place the lid on tightly when finished.

6. Discard any unused cereal if you do not eat it by the expiration date on the original packaging. While keeping the cereal stored in an airtight container will help prevent it from going stale, the manufacturer's "use by" date still applies.
