List Of Japanese Snack Food Candy

List of Japanese Snack Food Candy

Fans of Japan's candy can choose from a long list of Japanese snack food choices. Japan's candy is known around the world for its unusual flavor combinations, packaging and variety. Several products even attain cult status in blogs and forums on the Internet.

Neri Ame

Neri Ame provides a little fun and creativity for the consumer. Each pack includes a tiny tube container of thick colored liquid and a pair of tiny chopsticks. Pour the liquid on the little chopsticks first and then use the chopsticks to mix, pull and poke the syrup into a gooey stretchy mass of Japanese candy. Different colors signify different flavors. For example, yellow tastes like a banana. Like many Japanese candy snacks, Neri Ame is sweet but not excessively sweet the way some Western candies are.

Pocky

One of the most popular Japanese snack food candy treats started out as Chocoteck in 1965. Japanese teens loved the chocolate-covered thin cookie stick. The name eventually changed to reflect the Japanese word pokkin, which describes the sound the snack makes when you take a bite. Other flavors followed through the years; almond and strawberry, for example. Pocky is now shipped to other Asian countries as well as to Europe and the United States. Still popular in its native Japan, Pocky is even served in glasses of ice water in Japanese nightclubs and bars.

HiChew

HiChew, like Pocky, originated in Japan but has expanded to other countries. Some compare HiChew candy to Starbursts, the fruity chews sold in America. According to the Japanese candy's fans, however, HiChews are softer like soft bubble gum and make for easier chewing. HiChew flavors come in regular fruit flavors, with a few unusual flavors more common in certain areas. These include durian fruit and dragonfruit, both flavors not readily available in America. No matter the flavor, HiChews have acquired a reputation for tasting very much like the fruit they represent.
