Maintain A Barbecue Grill

Firing up the old barbecue grill is as American as apple pie. Nothing says celebration like having friends and family over on a warm day. But after having had that great day at the grill you have to maintain it in order to maximize it's longevity. Here are some tips on maintain your barbecue grill.

Instructions

1. Rub with oil and onion. After purchasing your grill, rub the grate (the rack which touches the food) down with vegetable oil and half an onion. Giving the grill a generous coat will ensure your food doesn't stick to the grate. Just like a frying pan, this will begin to "season" the grill.

2. Pre-heat your grill. After you've used your grill and it has built up a significant amount of charbroiled residue, heat your grill. The grate will always be easier to clean when hot.

3. Scrub the grate. Using a long-handled, brass-bristled brush scrub the grill grate. The charbroiled residue should fall away into the fire of the grill.

4. Wash the grate. Periodically through the season, it's a good idea to wash your grate with a wet soapy sponge. Then take a second sponge that is not soapy, and repeat the process. The reason for the second sponge is that because of the grid on the grate, it's important to make sure there is no additional soap residue in the cracks and crevasses.
