Rice cookers are often mislabeled as a single-purpose cooking product, used for only for rice. But because the rice cooker relies on steam to cook the rice, that steam can be utilized for a variety of other cooking purposes.
Seafood
Seafood can be difficult to cook because if cooked improperly, it can become almost inedible. A rice cooker is perfect for steaming seafood like shrimp, crab legs, and scallops. It is much more difficult to overcook seafood while steaming it.
Vegetables
Steamed vegetables can be a delicious alternative to traditional cooking methods. Any type of vegetables from carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower to even potatoes can be steamed in a rice cooker. Both fresh and frozen vegetables work in a rice cooker.
Soups and Stews
While you can't make a soup or stew in a rice cooker, a rice cooker is the perfect way to keep your favorite soup or stew warm. The rice cooker can work just like the more traditional crock pot, but is lighter, more efficient, and easier to use.
Fried Rice
Instead of serving plain white rice from a rice cooker, a delicious alternative might be fried rice. When the rice is about half cooked, add an egg and some soy sauce to the rice. Let it continue to cook all the way through and the end result will look just like fried rice.
Health Benefits
Using a rice cooker to cook other things has some important health benefits. Steaming seafood or vegetables rather than saut---eing ibutter or oil cuts down on the calories.
