Make Shoulder Roast In A Crock Pot

Making a Shoulder Roast in a Slow Cooker

There is nothing like coming home to the aroma of a simmering shoulder roast. With the use of a Crock Pot or other slow cooker, it is possible to cook a shoulder roast, even if you are away at work all day. A beef shoulder roast is a tough cut usually prepared in liquid as a pot roast. In order, to provide a scrumptious shoulder roast for your family, select the proper size of roast and slow cooker, prepare the roast with spices and seasonings, let the roast cook all day, and prepare gravy prior to serving.

Instructions

1. Trim the fat from the shoulder roast of the proper size for your Crock Pot. As a general rule, you should have 1 lb. of meat per each quart of your Crock Pot's capacity. For example, if you have a 6-qt. Crock Pot, then a 6 lb. shoulder roast would work the best.

2. Cover the bottom of the crock pot, with sliced onions. The onions prevent the meat from sticking to the bottom and add flavor to the roast. Rub the roast with salt and pepper, and place the roast on top of the sliced onions. Add one clove of minced garlic, two bay leaves, 1 cup of water, and 2 tbsp. of soy sauce.

3. Place the lid on the Crock Pot. If the Crock Pot is set on low, it will take nine and a half hours for a 6- to 7-lb. roast to cook. If you set the slow cooker on high, the same size roast will take seven and a half hours to cook.

4. Remove the roast from the slow cooker when the roast is cooked to desired doneness. Cover the roast so it will stay warm. Remove some broth from the slow cooker, and place it in a saucepan. Bring the broth a rolling boil. Make a paste from flour and water. Gradually add to the broth, as it continues to boil. Stir the mixture constantly, until the gravy reaches the desired thickness. Serve with the warm shoulder roast.
