Consuming raw milk can be dangerous.
Raw milk from cows, sheep, goats, or other animals that has not gone through the process of pasteurization to kill harmful bacteria carries a number of dangers. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, over 800 people have been been sickened by raw milk or products containing raw milk since 1998. There are serious health risks for those who consume raw milk or eat products containing raw milk, such as some cheeses.
Germs
There are several types of bacteria found in raw milk that can make people sick, such as brucella, salmonella and listeria. Parasites and viruses are also found in raw milk.
Illness
Consuming raw milk and products made with raw milk may cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, fever, body ache and headache.
Listeria and Pregnancy
The bacteria listeria can be extremely dangerous for pregnant women, resulting in miscarriage, illness or the fetal death of a newborn. Listeria can make the baby ill even while the mother may not have any symptoms.
Contamination
Since raw milk is unpasteurized, raw milk is a risk for contamination. Diseases, bacteria, humans, environment and feces are just a few of the many possible contaminates that could be found in raw milk.
