Things To Add To Homemade Granola

Raisins add a sweet taste to the granola.

Homemade granola allows a family to cook something together and then sit down and enjoy a healthy breakfast. You can add many ingredients to homemade granola for taste and health purposes. Different ingredients can make the granola sweet, salty or hearty. When determining your ingredients, think about whether you will bring the granola on a hiking trip or simply want a tasty breakfast.

Dried Fruit

Add dried cranberries to your granola to give it a tart flavor. Dried fruit such as pineapple, raisins and papaya will add sweetness to your granola. Dried bananas and apples will add a crunch to the cereal.

Seeds

Add a mixture of pumpkin and sunflowers seeds to the granola, suggests the Food Network. Seeds will add protein and healthy fat to the cereal. Bake the seeds for eight minutes on 350 degrees before adding them to the granola.

Nuts

Adding nuts to granola gives it more flavor. Place the nuts in the granola mixture before baking it in the oven. A variety of nuts, such as almonds, walnuts and cashews, will help your granola stand out.

Honey

Honey provides a healthy and sweet flavor to granola. Mix it with the granola mixture before baking the whole mixture to bring out the flavors in the honey.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon provides a healthy spice to the granola. The Food Network suggests adding 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon to 2 cups granola. This will adequately spice the cereal without overpowering the taste.

Canola Oil

Canola oil helps bind the granola together, according to Real Simple magazine. Mix 2 tbsp. canola oil with the mixture before baking it in the oven. Make sure the whole mixture gets covered with the oil before placing the granola on a baking sheet.
